Finishing Wooden Puzzles: Oils, Waxes, and What to Avoid

Finishing a mechanical wood puzzle is not the same job as finishing a table. On a table, the finish is a protective layer sitting on top of the wood, and its thickness is irrelevant. On a puzzle, the finish occupies part of a clearance budget measured in thousandths of an inch, and every sliding surface has two coated faces meeting each other.
Why film finishes cause problems
A film finish such as polyurethane, lacquer or shellac builds a measurable layer above the wood surface. Several coats of a brushing varnish can easily add a few thousandths of an inch per face. Put that on both mating surfaces of a burr notch and you have consumed the clearance the maker cut in.
The result is predictable. A puzzle that slid cleanly before finishing binds afterwards, and the owner assumes the wood has swollen. There is a second problem too: film finishes are somewhat tacky when freshly cured, and two coated faces pressed together can stick to each other and tear when separated.
Penetrating finishes behave differently. They soak into the wood and cure inside it rather than forming a distinct layer, so they leave the dimensions essentially unchanged. That is why hard wax oils, thin oil finishes and paste wax are the standard treatments for mechanical puzzles.
How drying oils actually cure
Drying oils do not dry by evaporation. They cure chemically, and understanding that explains both their behaviour and their hazard.
The open access review by Orlova, Harmon, Broadbelt and Iedema in Progress in Organic Coatings on the kinetics and simulations of linseed oil autoxidation describes linseed oil as a prominent drying oil used as a varnish and paint binder since the fifteenth century, and notes that dried, polymerised linseed oil is an insoluble binder whose properties depend on its composition and crosslinks, which are in turn affected by environmental conditions, added driers, and elevated temperatures.
Practical consequences for a puzzle:
- Cure time is not dry time. Oil can feel dry in a day and still be developing crosslinks for weeks. Assembling a freshly oiled puzzle too early is how pieces end up bonded to each other.
- Warmth speeds curing, which is useful in a controlled way and dangerous in an uncontrolled one.
- Thin coats cure properly. Thick coats stay gummy in the middle because oxygen cannot reach the interior.
Finish as a moisture barrier, and its limits
People often hope a finish will stop seasonal movement. It will not. A cured oil finish slows the rate at which a puzzle exchanges moisture with the air, which flattens out short spikes in humidity, but it does not prevent the wood from eventually reaching equilibrium with its surroundings. Over a season, a finished puzzle and an unfinished one end up in a similar place.
Treat finish as a buffer against a humid weekend, not as a substitute for stable storage. The storage environment does the real work.
The oily rag hazard, taken seriously
This is the part of puzzle finishing that can actually hurt you, and it is worth reading a fire authority on rather than a woodworking forum.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's guidance on the fire hazards of linseed oil explains that drying oils cure through oxidation, the same chemical process that generates fire, and that oil-soaked rags are the main risk because the cloth acts as an insulator, letting the oxidising oil get hot enough to smoke and eventually ignite. It gives an approximate ignition temperature of 120 degrees Celsius, notes that larger piles and warmer conditions increase the danger, and recommends never discarding oily rags into closed containers or heaps where they cannot dry, spreading them out in a well ventilated place, soaking them in water for several days before disposal, and using a metal container with a tight lid filled with water if they must be stored.
The US National Park Service fire prevention article on spontaneous combustion describes a real incident in which rags used to apply linseed oil to tool handles started a fire that spread to a workbench and a shed wall. For home projects it advises spreading soiled rags in a single layer on concrete, out of direct sunlight, with the corners secured against wind, so heat cannot build up. It also warns that if combustion has already begun you should call the fire service rather than spreading the material yourself, because introducing oxygen can cause immediate ignition.
Follow the guidance issued by your own local fire service, and treat any rag that has touched a drying oil as a hazard until it is fully cured or safely disposed of.
A sensible routine
- Sand to a fine grit, then remove dust thoroughly. Grit left in a notch is abrasive.
- Apply a thin penetrating oil or hard wax oil, wipe off all excess, and leave the pieces separated while curing.
- Wait longer than the tin says before assembly. Weeks, not days, for a tight puzzle.
- Maintain with a light paste wax buff. It reduces friction and adds almost no thickness.
- Never oil a puzzle that is already stuck. Adding liquid to a bound joint makes it worse.
